The Story of Rawah: A Premier Wilderness Ranch in Colorado
We have been operating as a guest ranch for more than 70 years. But how did we get here? Read on to gain some insight into our storied past:
The Beginning of a Guest Ranch
The history of Rawah begins in 1935, when Ralph Jordan purchased the land. Many people were buying cattle ranches at this time, but only a few, like Jordan, were opening up ranches just for visitors. Construction began in 1949, and Rawah opened its doors to the first guests in 1952.
Historic Buildings
Many of the original structures built in the 1940s and 1950s are still standing today. These cabins have been updated since, but the historic charm remains.
- The Rawah Lodge was completed in 1951 and was first used for guest lodging. Today, the lodge is where our guests come to dine and hang out.
- Mackward is the ranch’s oldest cabin, built in 1937. The cabin was remodeled in the 1990s and is now a roomy two-bedroom cabin.
- The Flying Horse cabin was built in 1957 and is now divided into two separate cabins.

Rawah Wilderness Area
One of the most special things about Rawah is the land. We are located within the Rawah Wilderness Area, one of the most scenic and unspoiled valleys in North America. In 1964, President Theodore Roosevelt passed the Wilderness Act to protect millions of acres of wilderness throughout the country. The Rawah Wilderness Area was included in the act and was preserved indefinitely.
We are proud to be stewards of this wilderness area and to have shared it with our guests for generations. Immerse yourself in the wide open spaces of Rawah as you horseback ride, fly fish, hike, and watch wildlife in the mountains!
