Fall colors in Colorado mountains at Rawah Ranch

Experience Colorado in Fall: Why September at Rawah Ranch Is Worth Every Moment

There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over Rawah Ranch in September. The aspens turn slowly to gold, the air takes on a welcome crispness, and wildlife is roaming across the valley. It’s the quiet magic of fall in Colorado, and our guest ranch is one of the best places to experience it. Plan your trip during September and experience peak fall colors, perfect weather, and authentic western activities in one of the most unspoiled valleys in North America. Spend your days horseback riding through fall foliage, fishing for trout on a quiet bend of the Big Laramie River, and following hiking trails deep into the wilderness.

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to plan a Colorado ranch vacation, this is it. Keep reading to discover why September is one of the best months to plan your getaway at Rawah.

Beautiful Fall Landscapes Backdropping Your Adventures

Fall reaches Rawah before it reaches most of Colorado. Because trees turn earlier at higher elevations, our 8,400-foot valley is one of the first places in the state to see the color change, usually around mid-September. The groves glow in reds, golds, ambers, and rust against the dark evergreens and the mountains beyond, providing a stunning backdrop for your days at the ranch.

Ideal Weather for Outdoor Exploration

Summer is wonderful, but fall has its own rhythm with crisp mornings, sunny days, and crisp evenings by the fire. Daily highs in September are usually around 60 degrees, with lows dipping down into the 30s. Enjoy the perfect conditions for days in the saddle, hiking through the mountains, and fly-fishing on our private stretch of the Big Laramie River.

Peaceful and Uncrowded Atmosphere

Summer is our busiest time, so fall offers something quieter: more room to roam and more space to breathe. With only around 30 guests on the property at once, Rawah is built for this kind of intimate getaway, and autumn only deepens the feeling. In the fall, this tucked-away valley feels like it’s yours alone, far from the summer crowds and the noise of everyday life.

Authentic Ranch Activities

Fall gives the ranch’s authentic Western activities a whole new backdrop:

  • Horseback riding across more than 20 trails winding through thousands of acres of wilderness alight with fall color.
  • Fly fishing on our private stretch of the Big Laramie River, running quiet and clear this time of year.
  • Hiking wilderness trails full of autumn color, wildlife sightings, and changing plant life.
  • Skeet shooting and archery out in the beautiful Rawah Valley.
  • Evening events like bonfires, live music, storytelling, and stargazing under some of Colorado’s darkest skies.

Special Events and Packages

September also brings a handful of special weeks worth planning a trip around:

  • Cowgirl Week is our dedicated women’s-only retreat, featuring special activities like grooming/horsemanship clinics, a leather belt-making workshop, paint & sip, and cattle sorting.
  • Adult Only is a specialty week just for adults, where you can enjoy all the regular ranch inclusions along with special activities like casino nights.
  • Bourbon Week is our most popular event of the year and a celebration of all things bourbon, with bourbon-focused dinners, tastings, and presentations.
